I thought I might as well start this off by talking about something big, something that affects all of us. I don’t know whether it’s a characteristic that is intrinsic to a person or just something certain people develop through time, but I’ve been a pensive person for as long as I can remember. I like thinking. I don’t mind that I’m not preoccupied watching television, reading a book or listening to music, sometimes all I need are me and my thoughts. I feel that in this day and age, in a time where frivolities take up most of our time, people simply don’t take the time to think about the important stuff.
Politics, history, philosophy and other disciplines have fascinated me from a very young age, mainly because my parents have always subtly instilled in me an interest for learning by talking to me about things that one wouldn’t normally discuss with a child. I appreciate what they did because it opened my eyes and I know I’d be a total ignorant had it not been for their efforts to make me into a cultured person. Now, I realise not everyone has the same opportunity, but I hate the fact that nobody tries anymore, nobody cares about what matters. There are times when I catch myself thinking about a celebrity’s life for example and I cringe, I actually feel guilty for doing it. It’s the strangest feeling. Obviously, I may be taking it a bit far, but I’m a puritan in that sense. I just worry that there are people out there that are so unaware about their surroundings that they never even think about the meaning of the universe. I don’t mean to say that we should be thinking about transcendental things constantly, but once in a while wouldn’t do us any harm, it’s rather enlightening in fact. I remember thinking about our place in the universe so profoundly once that I felt physically sick. I find it hard to believe that there are people, many people, that don’t understand that feeling. It’s so overwhelming. It’s almost like they’re so one-dimensional that they’re incapable of thinking about anything that isn’t superficial. Anyway, this was merely an example of our ignorance or, moreover, our unwillingness to explore (even our own minds!).
Back down to Earth-level, why don’t people care about who’s running their country, about knife crime, general injustice? Does it not affect them? Songs nowadays only talk about relationships and sex. Has humankind really become that dull, or perhaps dim? Clearly, ignorants have roamed the Earth since the beginning of time, but I fear that presently there’s an epidemic. We’re only concerned about ourselves and there’s nothing wrong with that, as long as we come out of our comfort zone once in a while. And while people neglect their brain’s natural needs to think and seek new knowledge, people will remain just as stupid, which is great for people like me who thoroughly enjoy judging “thickies”. I will admit, nonetheless, that frivolities are extremely fun and I’ll probably speak about them many a time on here.
